Biography[]
She has a somewhat authoritative parenting style with her children, but she deeply cares for them. She makes it clear to her youngest son, Dean, that women's rights include sexual liberty which was counterculture in the late 60s.
Lillian has an m.b.a.; instead of being able to use her masters in her preferred field of work she takes a job at the State Department of Treasury. She is the only person with an m.b.a. in her department, she has worked in the department the longest and, runs the department of accountants in everything but name. At the end of the episode Dean has empathy for his mother as she fights stereotypes of women and ethnicity and ends the episode showing her the respect he sees her missing at work. As the only woman in her office who is not portrayed as a secretary she is shown unable to eat lunch with other women yet still able to help them navigate office sexism.
She has a kind, intelligent, calm, and composed personality but is not afraid to take action if she or her family are treated unfairly. For example, she once quit a social club when they judged her being a working mom. She is also caring of the needs of others and tries to lift others up in her community, like when she helped an academically underperforming boy named Michael catch up on school since his parents were absent. She sometimes gets into disagreements with Kim, but she wants what is best for her at the end of the day.
